Origin is a factor in gemstone pricing — not the factor. A mediocre Kashmir sapphire trades below a superb Ceylon. A pale, included Mogok ruby loses to a vivid Mozambique. The stone has to be beautiful first. Origin is a multiplier on quality, not a replacement for it.
Why Doesn't a Kashmir or Burma Label Guarantee a High Price?
Because most stones from famous origins are average. I've handled Kashmir sapphires that were milky, over-included, and barely blue. They came with SSEF origin reports confirming Kashmir. They were still worth a fraction of what people expected.
The same applies to Mogok rubies. Burma has produced more rubies than any other source historically. Most of them are pale pink, heavily included, or too dark. The label "Burmese" doesn't transform a mediocre stone. A fine pigeon blood no-heat Burma ruby is extraordinary. A commercial-grade Burma ruby is just a commercial-grade ruby.
According to GIA's gemological research, geographic origin is determined by inclusion characteristics and trace element chemistry — it describes where a stone formed, not how beautiful it is. That distinction matters enormously at the point of sale.
How Does Quality from a "Lesser" Origin Beat a Famous Name?
I've seen this play out hundreds of times. A top-color, clean, no-heat Ceylon sapphire — say 10 carats, vivid cornflower blue, exceptional saturation — will outsell a washed-out 10-carat Kashmir at auction. Every time.
Zambian emeralds are another perfect example. For decades, Colombian origin was the only thing buyers cared about. Then Zambia started producing stones with deep, saturated green and better clarity than most Colombian material. Today, a fine Zambian emerald competes directly with Colombian stones on price per carat. The market adjusted because the quality demanded it.
Colombian emeralds still command premiums when they're exceptional — that warm, slightly yellowish green with jardin that doesn't kill transparency. But a dull, heavily oiled Colombian emerald? It trades below a clean, vivid Zambian every day of the week.
What Actually Drives Gemstone Prices at the Highest Levels?
Four things, in order: color, clarity, size, and then origin. Origin amplifies value when the first three are already excellent. It does almost nothing when they're not.
At Christie's and Sotheby's, where I regularly buy and sell, the lots that set records share the same profile: exceptional color saturation, high clarity for the species, significant carat weight, and no-heat treatment — with a prestigious origin as the final credential. Remove any of the first three and origin alone won't carry the price.
The record Kashmir sapphires selling for $200,000+ per carat aren't expensive because they're from Kashmir. They're expensive because they combine that velvety blue caused by microscopic rutile silk with top saturation, eye-clean clarity, and meaningful size. Kashmir origin is the cherry on top of an already perfect stone.
Does Treatment Status Matter More Than Origin?
Often, yes. A no-heat sapphire from Sri Lanka with top color and an SSEF or Gübelin report confirming no treatment will trade at a significant premium over a heated Kashmir sapphire. The market values what's natural.
Same with rubies. A no-heat Mozambique ruby with pigeon blood color — and I've seen exceptional ones — can trade above a heated Burma ruby of similar size. Treatment status is a harder line in the market than origin.
What Should Buyers Actually Focus On?
Buy the stone, not the passport. I tell every serious client the same thing: look at color first, clarity second, size third. Then let origin and treatment status add or subtract from there. Get proper lab reports — GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, AGL — so you know what you're actually buying. But never pay a premium for origin alone on a stone that doesn't earn it visually.
